The Tower: The Card Nobody Wants (But Everyone Needs)

Tower moments aren't punishment. They're precision demolition. Everything that falls was never supposed to be permanent.

Blaire Thomas·7 min read·March 22, 2026

Pull The Tower and most people's first instinct is: oh no. The dramatic lightning. The people falling. The whole structure in flames.

But here's what I want you to understand about The Tower: it only destroys what was already unstable. The lightning doesn't randomly hit solid ground. It hits the thing that was built on a foundation of lies, fear, or false identity. And it takes it down with precision.

The Tower doesn't destroy your life. It demolishes the cage you built around it.

The Symbolism

The Tower (XVI) in the Major Arcana comes after The Devil (XV) — and that's not an accident. You cannot be freed from what you cannot see. The Devil shows you the chains. The Tower breaks them. Whether you're ready or not.

  • The lightning bolt: sudden, divine truth. What has been hidden is now revealed.
  • The crown being blown off: ego structures and false identities don't survive.
  • The falling figures: the parts of you that believed the false structure was safe.
  • The flames: transformation. Fire is never just destruction — it creates space.

When The Tower Appears

In a reading, The Tower usually means one of three things:

  • Something is about to collapse — and you need to let it rather than rebuilding it again
  • A revelation is coming that will change how you understand something you thought was settled
  • You've been in a Tower moment and need to integrate what was revealed

The Shadow Work Question

What in my life am I calling stability that is actually a cage?

That's the Tower's question. Sit with it. The answer might surprise you.

A Prayer for Tower Moments

✦ Tower Moment Integration Spell ✦

What has fallen was not mine to carry.

What has been revealed is a gift, even if it doesn't feel like one.

I trust the demolition.

I trust what remains.

I will not rebuild the cage.

From this clearing, I build something true.

It is done. It is done. It is done.

it is done. it is done. it is done.
